Barolo 2012

Italy
About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Barolo 2012
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
The Altare family has farmed in La Morra since 1948; Elio transformed the estate in the mid-1970s after a revelatory trip to Burgundy, famously destroying the old botti with a chainsaw in 1983 to make way for barrique ageing; the estate is now led by his daughter Silvia. The 2012 Barolo vintage produced wines of good concentration and aromatic appeal, lighter and more accessible in structure than the classic years on either side, producing what critics described as a pretty yet precisely muscular expression of the vintage character. Walter Speller from JancisRobinson.com gave it 16.5 out of 20, and Bruce Sanderson from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 93.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Quite concentrated spicy cherry nose with hints of baking spice, followed by an almost feather-light palate with a firm tannic grip. Pretty yet muscular and with lightness of touch, summing up the characteristics of the 2012 vintage.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (May 2016)

“Aromatic and expressive, displaying macerated cherry, licorice and rose flavors, with hints of leather. Elegant, pure and well-structured, showing great balance and finesse. The finish echoes the fruit and adds a mineral element.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Dec 2016)
