Barbaresco Collection 2014

Italy
About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Barbaresco Collection 2014
3 (1 x 3) 750ml
This lot consists of the following wines:
Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva 2014 (1 x 750ml)
Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Ovello Riserva 2014 (1 x 750ml)
Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Pajé Riserva 2014 (1 x 750ml)

Three single cru Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco's celebrated 2014 vintage, offering a compelling study of the appellation's remarkable range of character. Muncagota is the most vivid and fresh - considered an overachiever of the vintage. Ovello is the most generous, celebrated for its velvety texture and polished mouthfeel. Pajè is the most austere and mineral.

Critical scores are uniformly strong: Speller at JancisRobinson.com awarded 17.5 to all three; Galloni at Vinous gave Muncagota 94 and Pajè 96; Larner at Wine Advocate rated Ovello 95, and Sanderson at Wine Spectator 93.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva 2014
“Mid ruby and the most youthful looking of all the 2014 Riserva crus. Cool raspberry nose that is slow to open up. Intense yet not sweet raspberry palate that is fresh and concentrated and with a firm structure. Very complete, but needs time. A little vibrant and mouth-watering on the finish.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Jun 2019)

“The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is another of the overachievers in this range. White pepper, bright red cherry, floral notes and mint cut through the fruit in this beautifully vivid, crystalline Barbaresco. There is a level of energy, drive and overall nuance in the 2014 I don't recall having seen in the past. The 2014 is a terrific Muncagota.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 94/100 (Aug 2018)

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Ovello Riserva 2014
“Mid ruby with orange tinges. Ripe, cool raspberry with quite a bit of concentration underneath, but still quite closed. Concentrated raspberry and strawberry palate with a linear, precise vein of acidity running all the way through. It gets more perfumed by the second while sitting in the glass. Bags of powdery tannins lining the concentrated, fresh raspberry fruit.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Jun 2019)

“Always one of my favorite wines from Produttori del Barbaresco, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello lays out a broad and soft mouthfeel, with tannins that have already been polished and integrated thanks to ample time in the bottle already. It's safe to say that this Ovello cru loyally demonstrates the level of richness and textural softness that this site is known for. The bouquet is redolent of bright berry fruit with cherry, blackberry and plum. Also, the 2014 vintage was a warm one at the end of the growing season, and you taste a little bit of that ripeness here too.” - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Jun 2019)

“Balsamic aromas of menthol, wild thyme and juniper complement the black cherry core of this muscular red, with dense tannins lending support. Though a bit more severe now than its peers, this is balanced overall and will age well.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Oct 2019)

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Pajé Riserva 2014
“Concentrated mid ruby and a shade deeper than the Asili Riserva of the same vintage. Earthy raspberry and rhubarb fruit with minerally notes, iron and strawberry preserve. Fantastic vibrant acidity, fresh red fruit and bags of chewy tannins. Tactile fireworks.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Jun 2019)

“Beams of minerality and salinity cut through a core of dense, dark fruit in the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè. Deeply pitched and tannic, the 2014 is a super-classic, youthfully austere Barbaresco that is going to need time to be at its best. Readers should expect a firm, structured Barbaresco. The finish alone is striking. Crushed rocks, minerals, sage and lavender add nuance to this chiseled, finely sculpted Barbaresco. Readers who can find it should not hesitate.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 96/100 (Aug 2018)
