Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo

Colheita Unoaked 2011

Portugal
About the Session

Portugal is represented almost entirely by the Douro Valley, with Niepoort leading the offering. A small but powerful offering of Ports round out the catalogue, with beautifully mature 1985’s from Feuerheerd’s and younger offerings from Grahams, Niepoort and Quinta de la Rosa. Finally, a fifteen year old Madeira Malvasia from Henriques & Henriques offers interest for the discerning buyer.

About this Item

Colheita Unoaked 2011
5 (1 x 5) 750ml
Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is a historic estate in the Cima Corgo sub-region of the Douro, producing a range of DOC Douro wines and Ports from indigenous varieties grown on schist soils between Régua and Pinhão. The Colheita Unoaked is vinified without any wood contact, allowing the Douro's indigenous varieties to express their natural concentration and freshness without any interference from barrel influence, a direct expression of the valley's terroir. The 2011 was a warm and generous vintage in the Douro. Julia Harding MW from JancisRobinson.com gave it 16.5 out of 20.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Rich, deep cherry red. Pure dusty (graphite-like) dark-red and black fruit. Really smells of wet rocks. Such vibrant fruit on the palate but without any excess sweetness, just showing all that fine dry Douro texture in the tannins. Great to see this fruit without a coating of oak. Finishes peppery and spiced and fresh but totally free of oak sweetness and the thick tannins that barrel ageing can give. And even without any oak, there's a dark cherry chocolate aftertaste. I'm not anti oak by any means but this is a great demonstration of what you can achieve without it when you have good fruit from good vineyards.” - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Dec 2015)
