Founded in 1858 by Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga, the Marqués de Riscal was the first winery in the Rioja to produce wine using the Bordeaux method; their first winemaker Jean Pineau was recruited directly from Château Lanessan in 1858, establishing a tradition of Bordelaise rigour that endures today. Located in Elciego in Rioja Alavesa, the estate pioneered the use of Graciano as a key blending variety and became a global architectural landmark when Frank Gehry's hotel opened at the winery in 2006. The Gran Reserva is sourced exclusively from vines over 80 years of age and aged for 32 months in oak barrels followed by three years in bottle before release. The 2005 was one of the finest Rioja vintages in a generation. Luis Gutiérrez from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 91.

“The 2005 Gran Reserva is a blend of 90% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo from their own vineyards as well as from grapes purchased from vine growers in the Rioja Alavesa area. They only include fruit from over 80-year-old vines in this wine, which ages for 32 months in oak barrels and another three years in bottle before being released. It is still quite dark and unevolved, showing notes of dark cherries, plums and plenty of spices, hinting at leather and truffles.
