About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata 2013
1 (1 x 1) 1500ml
One of La Morra's most historic estates, the Costamagna family's association with the Rocche dell'Annunziata cru dates to a Royal Military Command license to sell their wines granted in 1841; Alessandro Locatelli manages the estate today. Presented here in magnum format, this is the 2013 vintage, widely regarded as one of the finest recent Barolo years, a cooler and classically proportioned growing season that produced wines of great elegance, precision and exceptional aging potential.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

'Earthy aromas of truffle, pressed rose and new leather shape the nose. The structured palate offers licorice, dried black cherry and tobacco alongside fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2022-2031.' - Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast, 92/100 (Sep 2020)

'Developing attractive secondary aromas. Quite a taut, edgy nose - backed up by very fine tannins. Such vibrant acidity picks this wine up and hauls it along.' - Alistair Cooper MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Oct 2019)

'The 2013 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata shows impressive balance between its elegant side and its powerful inner core. The wine is lean and complete in terms of texture, but it fleshes out further just as soon as it hits the palate. It is aged in Slavonian oak for 24 months, with an extra 12 months in the bottle.' - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Apr 2018)

“The oak is so hidden. Beautifully subtle, stony, dry and finely textured. This is all about texture and length, not without fruit but that's in the background.” - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Jul 2015)
