About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Barolo Ginestra 2013
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
Founded in 1886 by Paolo Conterno at his Casa della Ginestra in Monforte d'Alba - one of the first Langhe growers to sell wine directly from the cellar to consumers - the estate is now run by Giorgio Conterno across 7 hectares of south-facing Ginestra MGA at 300 to 350 metres on steep Helvetian clay-marl soils. Extended macerations and large French oak casks remain the foundation of the traditional house style. The 2013 Barolo vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest recent years, a cooler and classically proportioned growing season producing wines of great elegance and aging potential. Monica Larner from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 95, and Antonio Galloni from Vinous gave it a rating of 91.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“The 2013 Barolo Ginestra shows grace and purity, with significant power at the back that is partially fueled by the wine's well-integrated alcohol (recorded at 15%). The wine's texture is compact, and the flavor knitting is tight and carefully detailed. These qualities bode very well for the future evolution of this vintage that will undoubtedly soften and flesh out with more time in the bottle.” - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Jun 2018)

“Black cherry, mocha, plum, licorice and smoke make a strong opening statement in the 2013 Barolo Ginestra. Bold and explosive in the glass, the 2013 offers plenty of depth and power but is also marked by oak, and starting to show signs of faint oxidation. It will drink well for at least a handful of years, but does not look like a long term keeper.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 91/100 (Oct 2017)
