Sadie Family
Palladius 2015
Cape Heritage
About the SessionA selection of South Africa’s finest wines, inspired by our rich wine heritage and the unique character of the Cape Winelands. Chenin Blanc is celebrated for its remarkable versatility, producing an exceptional range of wine styles, particularly in South Africa, home to the oldest Chenin Blanc vines in the world. These historic vineyards continue to produce wines of great diversity, elegance, and ageing potential. The Pinotage selection showcases leading producers, all of whom have become consistent flag bearers for this proudly South African variety.
About this Item
The 2015 vintage produced a Palladius of opulent richness and seamless generosity, the growing season delivering natural concentration and effortless fruit density that Eben Sadie worked with using the same uncompromising non interventionist principles of clay amphora, concrete eggs and older foudres with no additions. Sadie Family's 2015 Palladius earned 95 points from Tim Atkin MW, 5 stars and 95 points from Platter's South African Wine Guide, 95 points from Christian Eedes and 94 points from James Molesworth at Wine Spectator.
Provenance
The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.
For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.
Critics Ratings
'Made with no fewer than 11 grape varieties (you name it, it's in there), this is the richest and densest of the Sadie whites. It's still a baby right now, showing lovely stone fruit flavours of apricot and peach, understated oak, some pastry sweetness and a tangy, spicy finish. 2018-24.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 95/100
'Chenin with upwards of 8 other varieties fermented in concrete 'eggs' & clay amphora on lees, year older foudre. While 2015 mimics 2014 (97 pts)'s effortless richness & seamless generosity, its most attractive features are its elemental core, steely minerality. Like sibling, in larger bottle formats too.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2018, 5* (95/100)
'Opulent, lush and creamy in feel, this lets lemon curd, glazed peach and creamed pear and yellow apple flavors drape over the palate, while light verbena, shortbread and honeysuckle notes give this just the requisite lift and energy for balance. A long heather echo completes the seduction. A hedonistic delight. Drink now through 2023.' - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 94/100 (Feb 2018)
'Palladius 2015 from Sadie Family Wines is knock-out. A blend of Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Semillon, Semillon Gris, Viognier, Clairette Blanche, Roussane, Verdelho, Colombard and Palomino, it's the first vintage from a dedicated cellar, the components vinified clay amphorae and concrete eggs. The nose is exotic with notes of potpourri, cut apple, stone fruit, earth and spice while the palate is rich and thick textured, but equally wonderfully well balanced - really dense fruit offset by tangy acidity. Layers and layers of flavour and great length.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100 (Nov 2017)
