About this Item

White 2018
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
Donovan Rall's Rall White has become one of South Africa's most celebrated white blends, a year-on-year masterclass in the art of blending old-vine Chenin Blanc with Verdelho and Viognier from carefully selected parcels in the Swartland and Stellenbosch. Whole-bunch pressed, wild-fermented and aged on the gross lees in old barrels with restrained handling, it is a wine defined by savoury complexity, textural depth and the mineral energy that only genuinely old vines can provide. The 2018 vintage was shaped by drought - one of the most severe growing seasons in recent Cape memory - which concentrated the fruit in Rall's old-vine parcels to exceptional intensity. The Swartland's deep-rooted dryland bushvines, precisely the kind of vine material Rall sources, proved most resilient to the conditions, and the 2018 White emerged as one of the finest releases in the wine's history.

Platter's South African Wine Guide awarded it 5 stars and 97 points - its highest-ever score at that time - describing it as showing 'exactly the same blend as 2017 (95 pts), Chenin and Verdelho with a little Viognier, complex, supple and silky, lively and intense.' Tim Atkin MW scored it 95/100, and Julia Harding MW of JancisRobinson.com awarded 17/20.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

'Complex opening to 2018 (fruit, flowers, spice...) and no less profoundly interesting palate, supple and silky, lively and intense. The core of sweet fruit moves to a long finish on a firm, balanced structure. 13.5% alcohol. Wholebunch ferment; old oak-aged. Exactly the same blend as 2017 (95 pts), Chenin and Verdelho (71/24) and a little Viognier, mostly ex Swartland, some Helderberg.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2020, 5* (97 pts)

'As he did in 2017, Donovan Rall made his signature white wine without any Chardonnay, going for a 60/35/5 blend of Chenin Blanc, Verdelho and Viognier from the Swartland and Stellenbosch. Firmly established as one of the best blends in the Cape, it's still youthful and primary, but has stony reduction, fine lees and a medley of pear, citrus and stone fruit. 2021-26.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 95/100

'Surprisingly complex for such a young wine. Chalky mineral overlay on green fruits. On the palate, intense freshness clothed in pure bright fruit. Chewy texture and just a light scent on the long finish.' -Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Sept 2019)
