Monument 2020
Cape Heritage
About the SessionA selection of South Africa’s finest wines, inspired by our rich wine heritage and the unique character of the Cape Winelands. Chenin Blanc is celebrated for its remarkable versatility, producing an exceptional range of wine styles, particularly in South Africa, home to the oldest Chenin Blanc vines in the world. These historic vineyards continue to produce wines of great diversity, elegance, and ageing potential. The Pinotage selection showcases leading producers, all of whom have become consistent flag bearers for this proudly South African variety.
About this Item
Monument is a single-vineyard wine from one of the most remarkable old-vine Sémillon parcels in South Africa, the La Colline farm in Franschhoek, managed by Anton and Koos Roux, whose ancient vines produce a wine of towering density, phenolic richness and an almost impossibly singular character that Chris Alheit has described as having no definable context or precedent in the world. The wine is whole-bunch pressed and wild-fermented in old foudres.

Critics Ratings
"The impossibility of Monument is totally unique in the world and yet utterly South African. Both tense and nervous but somehow you can still relax. An extraordinary expression of old-vine Sémillon with no peer." - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 96/100 (Sep 2021)
"This creamy white delivers delicate spice and graphite notes, which lace flavours of macerated raspberry and peach fruit. Shows soft orange peel acidity that works with a pronounced tang of salty mineral to provide balancing cut and drive. The finish reveals hints of chamomile and lemon wax." - Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (Aug 2022)
