Sauternes 2016

The Distinguished Cellar of David Brice
About the Session

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Wine Cellar, fine wine merchants. His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Wine Cellar thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David celebrated the variation of vintage but also took advantage of great vintages. Over the last 10 years the 2016s have proven to be one of the greatest modern-day Bordeaux vintages, on par or superior to the likes of 2010, 2009 or 2005. Across Bordeaux, the wines are structured and pure combining exotic notes and sweet fruit. As part of our annual 10-year auction, we showcase 2016 Bordeaux vintage which will delight over many decades, especially in large format. David also bought the highly regarded Italian vintage, which produced exceptional wines in Piedmont and Tuscany especially.

About this Item

Sauternes 2016
12 (1 x 12) 750ml
Château Coutet 2016 (from Barsac in Sauternes, a Premier Grand Cru Classé) is hugely popular among sweet wine lovers and critics because it captures the essence of what makes great Sauternes/Barsac so appealing: luxurious botrytis-driven sweetness balanced by razor-sharp freshness and minerality. From the excellent 2016 Bordeaux vintage for sweets, it's often cited as one of the top performers that year - plush yet precise, opulent without excess.

Critics Ratings

‘Oh that's lovely. Ginger and sumac spice, and a gorgeous richness with the perfect balance of minerality. Rich but pure botrytis character and gently curling smoky notes leap out of the glass. Amazing persistency, easily one of the best wines in the tasting. This is excellent; succulent and mouthwatering.’ - Jane Anson, Decanter, 96/100 (Apr 2017)

‘With coaxing, the pale lemon colored 2016 Coutet slowly unfurls to give a myriad of preserved lemons, pineapple pastry, almond croissant, fresh ginger and lime blossoms scents with nuances of chalk dust, white pepper, star anise and cedar. Rich, seductive and yet exquisitely balanced, the satiny-textured palate has layer upon layer of citrus and savory notions, finishing very long and spicy. 2021-2044’ - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 95/100

‘The vibrant, tropical fruit-coulis character draws you into this concentrated and elegant Barsac. Then the crisp acidity and a wave of lemon and mineral character comes through, driving the finish out in the direction of the horizon. Drink or hold.’ - James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 95/100 (Feb 2019)

‘Correct but somewhat restrained nose, particularly in comparison with Clos Haut-Peyraguey. Just a little dull. Not the juiciest. Not the sweetest. Very youthful. 13.7% 2025-2040’ - Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 16.5+/20 (Apr 2017)
