Pagodes de Cos

Saint-Estèphe 2016

The Distinguished Cellar of David Brice
About the Session

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Wine Cellar, fine wine merchants. His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Wine Cellar thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David celebrated the variation of vintage but also took advantage of great vintages. Over the last 10 years the 2016s have proven to be one of the greatest modern-day Bordeaux vintages, on par or superior to the likes of 2010, 2009 or 2005. Across Bordeaux, the wines are structured and pure combining exotic notes and sweet fruit. As part of our annual 10-year auction, we showcase 2016 Bordeaux vintage which will delight over many decades, especially in large format. David also bought the highly regarded Italian vintage, which produced exceptional wines in Piedmont and Tuscany especially.

About this Item

Saint-Estèphe 2016
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
Les Pagodes de Cos is the second wine of Château Cos d'Estournel, one of Saint-Estèphe’s most famed estates. Unlike the grand vin, Pagodes de Cos is made from a selection of parcels (about 55 % of the harvest in 2016) and typically sees slightly less new oak, yielding a wine that’s more approachable in its youth but still expressive of Cos d’Estournel’s terroir and quality.

Critics Ratings

‘A red with very deep and intense fruit character, yet rich tannins to back it all up. Full-bodied, layered and powerful. The second wine of Cos d’Estournel is serious again in 2016.’ - James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 94/100 (Feb 2019)

‘Proof that in the great vintages, the smart money should be seeking out second wines of classified growths for wines that are guaranteed to deliver. This is packed with spice, chocolate, opulent in texture with an unmissable gourmet edge, given definition by a precise edge of cassis bud and liquorice, and a better balance overall than the 2010 Pagodes, although both are delicious wines. 0.5% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 2021-2036’ - Jane Anson, Decanter, 93/100 (Feb 2021)

‘The second wine of the estate is no slouch. The 2016 Pagodes de Cos has some grand vin character in its cassis and graphite aromas and flavors. Showing more incense, graphite, and hints of flowers with air time, this medium to full-bodied, rounded, beautifully textured effort is well worth a case purchase. Drink this beauty, the equal to most estates’ top wines, while you wait on the grand vin to come around.’ - Jeb Dunnuck, 93/100 (Feb 2019)

‘Dense and full of dark fruits, this second wine from Cos d’Estournel comes from specific parcels. With blackberry fruits and rich, generous tannins, the wine has weight and concentration. The freshness at the end is so typical of the vintage.’ - Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 93/100 (May 2019)
