The Distinguished Cellar of David Brice
About the Session

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Wine Cellar, fine wine merchants. His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Wine Cellar thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David celebrated the variation of vintage but also took advantage of great vintages. Over the last 10 years the 2016s have proven to be one of the greatest modern-day Bordeaux vintages, on par or superior to the likes of 2010, 2009 or 2005. Across Bordeaux, the wines are structured and pure combining exotic notes and sweet fruit. As part of our annual 10-year auction, we showcase 2016 Bordeaux vintage which will delight over many decades, especially in large format. David also bought the highly regarded Italian vintage, which produced exceptional wines in Piedmont and Tuscany especially.

About this Item

Baron Les Tourelles de Longueville 2016
6 (1 x 6) 1500ml
The Les Tourelles de Longueville 2016 (from Château Pichon-Longueville Baron, often called Pichon Baron) is the second wine of this iconic Pauillac estate in Bordeaux's Médoc region. It's a strong performer from the exceptional 2016 vintage and offers excellent value as a more approachable, earlier-drinking expression of the château's style, while still carrying serious quality and pedigree.

These large-format bottles are often used for aging, celebration, or display, and can hold wine extremely well due to the lower oxygen-to-wine ratio.

Critics Ratings

‘Deliciously ripe and balanced with attractive, earthy nuances, surrounding ripe-plum and red-berry aromas and flavors. Sheet-like tannins layer up neatly and build a long, esteemed finish. Second wine of Pichon Baron. Try from 2023.’ - James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 94/100 (Feb 2019)

‘The 2016 Les Tourelles de Longueville is a blend of 58% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot (from young vines that are destined to go into the Grand Vin one day, according to Christian Seely), matured in 30% new oak for 12 months. It offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, just a touch of melted tar with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a powerful opening, dense black fruit tinged with graphite, a solid Deuxième Vin with a slightly aloof finish (at least at the moment). There is a pleasant graphite note lingering long on the aftertaste that completes a fine Pauillac to enjoy over the next 12-15 years. 2021-2040’ - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90-92/100 (Apr 2017)

‘Tasted blind. Some real vitality on the nose of this - with some Merlot? (58% apparently). Sweet and (relatively) soft. Good early-maturing fruit weight. Clean and brisk. 2024 - 2029’ - Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 16/20 (Feb 2020)
