la Vieille Julienne

Côtes-du-Rhône Liet dit Clavin 2016

The Distinguished Cellar of David Brice
About the Session

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Wine Cellar, fine wine merchants. His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Wine Cellar thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David celebrated the variation of vintage but also took advantage of great vintages. Over the last 10 years the 2016s have proven to be one of the greatest modern-day Bordeaux vintages, on par or superior to the likes of 2010, 2009 or 2005. Across Bordeaux, the wines are structured and pure combining exotic notes and sweet fruit. As part of our annual 10-year auction, we showcase 2016 Bordeaux vintage which will delight over many decades, especially in large format. David also bought the highly regarded Italian vintage, which produced exceptional wines in Piedmont and Tuscany especially.

About this Item

Côtes-du-Rhône Liet dit Clavin 2016
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Côtes‑du‑Rhône Lieu‑Dit Clavin is a terroir‑driven Southern Rhône red from the historic, biodynamic estate of Jean‑Paul Daumen. Sourced from vines averaging 85 years old on the Lieu‑Dit Clavin, a hillside site of Miocene sands, red clay and limestone close to the Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape boundary. The name Lieu‑Dit Clavin highlights the specific named vineyard ("clavin" referring to this distinct parcel) emphasising site identity rather than generic regional fruit, a philosophy that gives this wine its individual character and sense of place.

Critics Ratings

‘A very drinkable, fresh and surprisingly well-balanced Côtes du Rhône from this hot vintage. Vibrant, juicy acidity and fairly firm tannins on the long finish suggest that this has several years ahead of it and is likely to improve. Very authentic. Not cheap for a Côtes du Rhône, but ignore the appellation in this case, this is an excellent wine. From a plot of vines next to the winery that lies just outside the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Three months in concrete, 18 months in foudre and another year in bottle before release - they take the winemaking seriously here. 2022-2027’ - Matt Walls, Decanter, 92/100 (Sep 2022)

‘Smooth, chalky tannin with delicious black bramble fruit. Clean and precise with weight but not heaviness. Very smart and plush with a sense of delicacy alongside the powerful fruit. 2018-2026’ - Richard Hemming MW, jancisrobinson.com, 16.5+/20 (Oct 2017)
