Margheria Barolo 2016

The Distinguished Cellar of David Brice
About the Session

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Wine Cellar, fine wine merchants. His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Wine Cellar thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David celebrated the variation of vintage but also took advantage of great vintages. Over the last 10 years the 2016s have proven to be one of the greatest modern-day Bordeaux vintages, on par or superior to the likes of 2010, 2009 or 2005. Across Bordeaux, the wines are structured and pure combining exotic notes and sweet fruit. As part of our annual 10-year auction, we showcase 2016 Bordeaux vintage which will delight over many decades, especially in large format. David also bought the highly regarded Italian vintage, which produced exceptional wines in Piedmont and Tuscany especially.

About this Item

Margheria Barolo 2016
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
The Luigi Pira Barolo Margheria 2016 is widely regarded as an outstanding wine, particularly from a stellar vintage in Piedmont's Barolo region. 2016 is considered one of the greatest recent vintages for Barolo (often compared to classics like 2010 or 2013).

Beyond quality, the wine is called a standout for its relative affordability compared to other top Barolo crus/single-vineyard bottlings from big-name producers, offering high-end quality at a more accessible price point, which adds to its appeal among enthusiasts.

Critics Ratings

‘The Luigi Pira 2016 Barolo Margheria is an exotic, complex expression of the vintage with the most intricate aromatics of pressed purple flowers, pink musk , cherry cola, licorice and tar, dried rose petals and the most personality filled botanical, herbal vermouth spice nuances. The tannins are powerful and grainy coating the mouth with a fabulously plush mineral grip. On the palate there are hints of saline cassis, black cherry and bramble berry spice with a long, liquid mineral stony finish. This possess all the power and structure to last a very long time in the cellar. Something very serious but also very magical from a fantastic Barolo vintage.’ - Greg Sherwood MW, 96/100 (Mar 2021)

‘The Luigi Pira 2016 Barolo Margheria is a soulful wine that opens to a floral bouquet marked by blue flower, pressed violet and lilac. Those aromas are wonderfully elegant and nuanced, and the wine sports a graceful and polished personality. Nothing is out of place. At the core, you get wild berry and cassis. Dig a little deeper to discover rusted iron or ferrous earth. Fruit is sourced from a 1.5-hectare site with classic Serralunga d'Alba calcareous clay soils that lend more structure and power to the wine. Some 7,000 bottles were produced, and I highly suggest you seek these out. 2024-2045’ - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 96/100 (Jul 2020)

‘Serralunga d'Alba. Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Still a little backward on the nose but revealing ripe, concentrated and succulent fruit with gripping tannins. Great length and quite powerful, but not heavy or demanding. 14.5%. 2024 - 2038’ - Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, 17+/20 (Jul 2020)
