The Distinguished Cellar of David Brice: A Rhône Collection
About the Session

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Wine Cellar, fine wine merchants. His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Wine Cellar thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

The Rhône valley was one of David’s favoured regions, known for its diverse range of reds and whites. These were quintessential French wines from excellent easy-drinking, to fine, long-term treasures. He enjoyed wines from all the villages from Vaucluse to Vacqueyras, and Cornas to Côte-Rôtie. David focused on top vintages for long-term maturation and lesser vintages for earlier drinking. The highlight perhaps is his deep collection of top Châteauneuf-du-Pape from great vintages like 2010 and 2007.

About this Item

Gigondas La Tour Sarrasine 2017
10 (1 x 10) 750ml
The name La Tour Sarrasine refers to the historic Saracen tower that stands near the family’s vineyards, a landmark of the estate’s traditional terroir. The vineyards lie in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail, in the southernmost part of the Gigondas AOC, on stony limestone soils that produce wines with both sun‑driven ripeness and freshness.

Critics Ratings

'The Gigondas La Tour Sarrasine always seems to be a winner and the 2017 is no exception. With a big, meaty, peppery nose that has ample cedary spice and sweet red and black fruits, it's medium to full-bodied, has a wonderful sweetness of fruit, ripe tannins, and terrific balance. It's rock solid and will shine of upwards of a decade. The blend is 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, and 15% Syrah, aged two years in concrete and stainless steel.' - Jeb Dunnuck, 92/100 (Sep 2019)

'Smoky tones on the nose dissipate with aeration revealing brighter notes of ripe, zesty black berry and wild mint. Full bodied and rich on the palate, this Grenache-dominant blend offers punchy black-cherry flavor edged by a sizzle of sweet spice. At peak from 2021 through 2027, the wine can hold further.' - Anna Lee C. Iijima, Wine Enthusiast, 91/100 (Jan 2020)

'Tasted blind. Understated, compact nose with black cherry and furry, fine tannins. Glossy fruit on the palate, with some black-olive savoury character to finish. 2020-2028' - Richard Hemming MW, jancisrobinson.com, 16/20 (Oct 2018)
