Notes
Another example from the edition is currently held in the Museum of Modern Art collection in New York.
The present lot, The Same But Different, marks the artist’s first foray into printmaking, following a suggestion by Clive van den Berg that Edmunds create a work for an upcoming group exhibition titled Images of Self. When beginning the linocut, the artist had little sense of how to approach the medium and instead chose to carve a meandering line starting from the center of the matrix, which then proceeded to follow itself across the composition.¹
The work and its various editions were subsequently exhibited several times, beginning with Clive van den Berg’s exhibition and eventually entering the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. In a review of his 2001 Houding exhibition at João Ferreira Fine Art, Tracy Murinik described the work as “a linocut of red on white that resonates in a similar way, despite an entirely different physical format. It is Zen-like and hypnotic: a single fluid red line that plays out a pattern of ongoing slight ebb, with occasional subtle shifts in rhythm or breath, building to a body of pulsing lines.”2
