About this Item
Notes
One of a series of five baskets from a dream sequence. Ma Kushonya said this contemporary interpretation of the Running Ostrich design came to her in a dream. A master basket weaver from Maun, Botswana, is renowned for her intricate and innovative designs. A Hambukushu artisan, she learned the craft from her mother after the family relocated to Botswana in the late 1960s. While her mother produced functional domestic containers, Ma Kushonya reinterpreted the tradition, transforming basketry into a form of individual artistic expression and sees her baskets as fibre art.
Her coiled palm-fibre works incorporate traditional Kavango patterns, often inspired by her dreams, blending heritage with contemporary creativity.
Provenance
Michael Heuermann Collection.
