Notes

"My work is a dialogue with the natural world. Working intuitively with harvested natural fibres and grasses, I let the material guide my hands as I knit, crochet and weave. Forms and textures emerge, offering reminders about our interconnectedness with all things. My work is a testament to the reciprocal care we share with the land – a reminder to nurture and be nurtured in return."

Berdine van der Mescht has Eastern Cape roots and studied teaching at Stellenbosch, later pursuing sculpture and painting. Her work is inspired by nature, and she works intuitively with various mediums, including grass and plant materials, which allow her to embrace a conceptual approach.
