About this Item
Notes
An exceptional group of Kuba baskets, beautifully patinated through decades of use. Given their size and lidded form, it is most likely that these baskets served non-food purposes — for storage, ritual, or ceremonial use rather than everyday food service. They may have formed part of a suite of courtly or status objects within Kuba society, used to hold small personal items such as pigments, snuff, or ornaments. Their refined geometry, balanced proportions, and rich surfaces reflect both functional mastery and the Kuba aesthetic ideal, where utility and beauty are inseparably woven together.
Provenance
Colin Sayers Collection.
