Erika Hibbert was born in 1966 in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she studied Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand. During the 1980s and 1990s, she was active as both an artist and teacher, lecturing in Soweto and working with community projects such as The Artists Proof Studio and Spaza Art. In 2004, she moved to Botswana, and in 2009 immigrated to the United States. Now based in New York, Hibbert exhibits internationally. Hibbert works with charcoal, inks, oxides, pigments, soil, beeswax, and oil paint, as well as printmaking techniques, to explore themes of belonging, migration, alienation, and human connection.
