Notes
Bhekisani Manyoni was born on 6 September 1945 in Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal, and later moved with his family to Dundee, near Rorke’s Drift. He studied at the Rorke’s Drift Art School, where he was mentored by Belgian-born artist Leon de Smit and befriended John Muafangejo, whose influence shaped his artistic path. Trained in fine arts, ceramics, weaving, and printmaking, Manyoni developed a versatile practice. In 1970, he became curator of the Pandora Gallery in Mbabane, Swaziland, and in 1979 joined the Katlehong Art Centre as a teacher. Specialising in ceramic sculpture and linocuts, he has exhibited internationally and received the Hans Merensky Trust Award.
