Notes

Large brass-mounted storage chests such as this one, were among the most valued items of furniture for V.O.C employees, whether high ranking officials or ordinary seamen.

These chests were sturdy and secure to store and protect the owner's most precious possessions on long sea voyages or during periods of residence in the colonial outposts.

The chests were made of expensive tropical timbers and embellished with brass mounts to reflect the wealth of their owners. They could transform from seaman's chests to impressive pieces of domestic furniture, adapted to everyday use.
