Notes

Rodney Band was born in South Africa and grew up in Israel. He specialises in creating large sculptural bowls hand-hewn from carefully sourced logs which are characterised by unique colour and character.

The bowl is carved from walnut root, with a natural bark edge encircling the rim. The surface is decorated with African blackwood inlay and finished with antique wax.

Band describes this work as having been made from walnut root, dug from beneath the ground and selected for its unusual form and distinctive bark texture. The natural bark has been retained around the rim of the bowl, emphasising the organic quality of the piece. The surface is further decorated with African blackwood inlay, a labour-intensive detail which contrasts with the warm tone and natural figuring of the walnut. The bowl was finely sanded and finished with antique wax, creating a polished surface while preserving the character of the root wood.
