Ernest Fiene was born in Elberfeld, Germany, and emigrated to the United States of America in 1912. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Beaux-Arts Institute in New York, later focusing on printmaking at the Art Students League. Fiene is known for lithographs, etchings, and paintings that blend realism and abstraction, often depicting New York cityscapes, landscapes, and industrial scenes. Influenced by European modernism, he furthered his studies in Paris and Italy on a Guggenheim Fellowship. Fiene also taught at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design, New York. His work is held in major collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
