Notes

Sir William Russell Flint was born in Edinburgh and trained under his father, a lithographer, before attending the Royal Institute of Art, Edinburgh, and the Heatherley School of Fine Art, London. Flint began his career as an illustrator, contributing to publications such as The Illustrated London News, The Canterbury Tales, and King Solomon’s Mines. During World War I, he served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and the Royal Air Force.

Following the war, Flint traveled widely in France and Spain, drawing inspiration from local landscapes and cultural life. He is primarily known for his watercolours, especially studies of the female form executed in muted ochres. Flint served as President of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours for twenty years and was knighted in 1947. His work is included in major public collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Walker Art Gallery in London, and the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.
