Danish designer Kai Kristiansen, born in 1929, began his career as a cabinetmaker before studying under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. At just 26, he opened his own studio and became a prominent figure in Danish modern design. He was known for his refined use of teak and rosewood and his most celebrated creations, include the No. 42 Chair and FM Reolsystem Wall Unit which were produced by major Danish manufacturers. Though many designs ceased production due to manufacturing complexity, they remain highly collectible, and he later revived some pieces in collaboration with Japan’s Miyazaki Chair Company.
