About this Item

A Victorian copper measures, 19th century

Notes

Copper haystack measures, named for their haystack pitcher shape were first used in England in the 18th century to measure ale, cider and other spirits in pubs. They range in size from 1/2 pint to 4 gallons, and always have the size stamped on the front or side of the pitcher - Periodically, a local official would inspect each establishment to check that the measures were correct, and would use a lead seal to stamp the rim with the date, number and crown if it was correct.
