About this Item

A Regency mahogany pedestal Pembroke table, 19th century
the rectangular hinged top with rounded corners, a frieze drawer below with opposing dummy drawer, on ring-turned column, raised on quadruple hipped legs with scroll feet and brass castors, 73cm high, 118cm extended, 114cm deep

Notes

The Pembroke Table has drop leaves on each side that can be opened and supported using small hinged brackets to create a larger table when needed. They were usually fitted with castors so they could be moved around easily for their many different purposes of taking meals, playing cards, writing and needlework.

The Pembroke table was named after the Countess of Pembroke who first ordered and commissioned this table in the late 17th century. This was reproduced by the famous furniture designers Chippendale and Hepplewhite along with Victorian and Edwardian cabinet makers.

They were largely replaced in the early 19th century by sofa tables which have the drop-down leaves on the shorter as opposed to the longer sides.
