About this Item
An Anglo-Indian padouk military chest, 19th century
in two parts, the rectangular top above a pair of short and two long drawers, the lower section with two graduated long drawers, all with recessed brass handles, on ring-turned bun feet, 108cm high, 84cm wide, 47cm deep
Notes
The campaign or military chest was designed for army officers and was built to be strong and practical so they could be transportable between camps. They often featured detachable feet, inset handles, brass-bound corners and carrying handles.
Most of these items of furniture were made in India during the 18th and 19th centuries for the colonial British market resident at the time, using indigenous hardwoods such as teak, camphor, padouk and ebony.
