Critics Ratings
‘The 2005 Lagrange was picked from 21 September until 10 October. It has a harmonious and vigorous bouquet with blackberry, cedar, tobacco aromas and just a light estuarine scent that emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins and much more mid-palate presence than prior vintages. There is more body and grip, a sense of boldness towards the finish that should stand it in good stead for long-term ageing. Superb.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Sep 2019)
‘Dark crimson. Scented, mineral nose. Really quite aromatic. Lively and relatively light but with excellent tannins and life to it. Not an extreme 2005 but a wine with the concentrated dryness of the vintage. Solid. Impossible to imagine drinking this without food!’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jan 2015)
‘The nose has great intensity with dark berries, dark chocolate, pastille and just a faint toffee-ish scent with good definition. It is certainly one of the more generous Saint Julien 05’s at this stage. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, succulent entry: blackberry, black olive, crushed stone with a fine, precise finish and great persistency. There are cheeky hints of espresso and latte on the aftertaste.’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (Jul 2011)
‘The tannins dominate this dark, brooding wine. At this stage, it seems to have closed up, leaving the fruit and acidity buried. But with this concentration, the future looks promising. There is a long aging potential here.’ – Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 94/100 (Jun 2008)
‘Currant, mineral, plum and light toasty oak follow through to a full body, with ultrasilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is thoroughly beautiful. Superbalanced and very pretty. Best after 2011.’ – Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Mar 2008)
