Notes
After spending almost a year in Europe, Stern travelled to the island of Maderia in 1963 where the current lot was painted. This Portuguese painting encapsulates a buzzing street scene with the central focus on a fruit seller with a large basket of what is likely to be bananas and a smaller basket of tomatoes. The ochre-coloured building in the background, characteristic of Stern's Madeiran scenes, contrasts the large fruit tree and figures decorating the vibrant street.
