Notes
Thomas Buttersworth was a prolific marine artist whose work was deeply influenced by his experiences as a sailor during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). While serving, he created numerous paintings, including notable depictions of the Battle of St. Vincent and various Mediterranean scenes, dated, 1797, 1799, and 1800. After returning to London, he produced a remarkable body of paintings and watercolours, eventually earning the title of Marine Painter for the Dutch East India Company.
