Notes
William Alcock emigrated to the Cape in 1871 at the age of 21. He had been trained in England as a tinsmith and sheet metal worker and his first workshop produced cans for food manufacture. He was the first mayor of Port Elizabeth and was also the first person to own a motor car in the district.
