About this Item
Cape Colony
Cape copper and brass laundry iron, Joseph Lawton, mid 19th century
22cm high
Notes
Joseph Lawton arrived in Cape Town in 1820 and by 1836 had established a large workshop on Burg street in Cape Town. The Lawton family made a wide variety of household utensils as well as brandy stills. The influence of Joseph Lawton on 19th century copper-smithing at the Cape was considerable, he was regarded as one of the best in the trade and trained many of the his country counterparts at his workshop.
Laundry irons were filled with live coals and had wooden handles as metal handles would have been too hot to hold.
