Pierneef was surely affected by the work of Tom Thomson and the Canadian Group of Seven, a contemporaneous band of frontier-pushing artists, devoted to nature, indifferent to local artistic convention, and loosely linked by a preference for expressionist brushwork and off-kilter colour combinations.
