At the end of the 18th century, the family of Count Hippolyte de Maurès de Malartic purchased the estate. He was an admiral who served in the French navy, and to commemorate his bravery in the battle of Quebec in 1756, an 18th-century ship appears on the wine label. The next owners of the estate also added the name Malartic to that of Lagravière as a tribute. The new era of the château began in 1997 with its purchase by the Bonnie family. They modernized the estate, replanted the vineyards and started increasing the size of their vineyards.
Critics Ratings
'The 2006 Malartic-Lagravière has a delineated bouquet of mainly blackberry and blueberry, almost mimicking Margaux with charming violet aromas. The aromatics are very seductive but as I have observed on other bottles, the palate does not quite match up: rigid and obdurate with graphite towards the finish that seems to have never quite shaken the hardness it was born with.
