Notes
Born in Vienna, Austria in 1922, Alice Goldin was an admired printmaker (woodblock and screenprint) and painter. When she was 16, Goldin and her family fled Vienna for England after the Nazis invaded Austria during World War II. Goldin served as a nurse during this war. In 1948, she visited South Africa and stayed because she met and married her future husband. In 1950, she enrolled in the Pretoria Technical College to study art and went on to study further in Rome, London, and Cape Town. Goldin died in Cape Town in 2016 after a successful artistic career that spanned over 60 years.
