David Koloane did not aim for verisimilitude in his work, but to encapsulate the experience of urban life in Johannesburg. The incandescent effect produced by the brushwork is further enhanced by the similarity of colours, which are blended together in a great orchestral symphony. The result of using warm and cool colours in this composition goes beyond the simplification of the figures, it also displays mystery, symbolism and individual imagination.
