Ciment fondu is a high quality refractory cement used principally for lining purposes where high temperatures are to be encountered. Its appeal to sculptors as a casting material is that it is very fine and can pick up every detail in the pattern/mould in which it is being used as a first coat. This coat is normally backed up with a mixture of sand and more ciment fondu and then reinforced with fibreglass mat.
