Kevin Arnold’s decades of experience at Delheim and Rust en Vrede led him to the prime Waterford estate on the slopes of the Helderberg. Having researched which varieties may perform best, Kevin planted a basket of Mediterranean varieties with the vision of producing an icon blend from the property. At the entrance of the Blaauwklippen Valley, the Shiraz was Waterford’s most famous wine before the release of the Jem. Interestingly Oprah Winfrey chose the Kevin Arnold Shiraz to accompany the main course at her 50th birthday celebration. This was the first 100% Cabernet since 1998 and was awarded 4.5* by the 2011 Platter’s Guide.

Bright, deep ruby-red. Dark berries joined by pepper and a hint of green pea on the nose. Then concentrated and suave in the mouth, with nicely delineated flavors of currant, pepper and beefsteak tomato. This fine-grained, varietally accurate cabernet is most impressive today on the palate-saturating finish, which features a very firm tannic structure for extended aging. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Just a little green on the nose. But lovely round minty supple fruit on the palate. Still a little dry on the end.’ –Jancis Robinson (January 2015), 16.5/20

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon has a potent bell pepper and damp earth nose that to be frank, just feels a little heavy-handed compared to more recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, grainy tannin but a little rustic and still with that austere, rather drying finish that I remarked upon last time.
