Produttori del Barbaresco is a producer of red wines from the Nebbiolo grape in the Barbaresco appellation. As well as being one of the very finest and best-known producers in Barbaresco, it is also regarded as one of the greatest wine cooperatives in the world. An earlier cooperative, founded in 1894, had established Barbaresco as a separate wine district rather than just a supplier of Barolo, but it was closed down in the 1930s due to Mussolini's economic policies. By 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco realized that the only way the small growers of the area would survive was if they joined together. He united 19 growers under the Produttori del Barbaresco name, and the first three vintages were made in the church basement before the operation was moved across the village square to the current winery.
The Barbaresco Riserva is a blend of the Crus produced by Produttori del Barbaresco, and was only released in certain years.
Produttori del Barbaresco is a type of cooperative arrangement between 56 growers in Barbaresco. Its roots go back to 1958 when small growers of the region working in cooperation with the priest of Barbaresco village came together to ensure the quality and uniqueness of their production. Each family still maintains their small vineyard holdings, and most years these are blended into either bottlings of Barbaresco or Nebbiolo, and in great years there can be one or more of 9 single vineyard bottlings produced. These wines will always have their vineyards and growers noted and are quite special.

'The Produttori’s 2008 Barbaresco is simply fabulous. A sweet bouquet melds into expressive fruit in a Barbaresco that is exceptionally polished and refined. The 2008 boasts striking sweetness and inner perfume to match its understated, elegant personality. Quite frankly, the 2008 is very hard to resist today, as the tannins are quite polished. Unusually sweet, silky and refined, the 2008 will take the better part of a decade to show the full breadth of its pedigree. At $37, it is one of the very finest values in ageworthy wine from anywhere in the world. This is a magnificent showing from the Produttori and a great introduction to the 2008 harvest at this historic house.
