About this Item
Thanks to the emergence of modern icons like Numanthia, which offers a rarely-seen combination of power and elegance, ‘Spain has become the most dynamic wine region in Europe’ says Wine Spectator. Numanthia’s style relies on a selection of un-grafted, unirrigated 70 – 120-year-old vines of Tinta de Toro (a clone of Tempranillo). Tinta de Toro yields great fruit concentration, intensity and structure – a more powerful and opulent style of wine compared to traditional Rioja. Upon its inception in 1998, Robert Parker wrote: ‘This sensational new offering will prove to be the breakthrough effort for the Toro appellation.’ In the late 2000s, Neal Martin wrote: ‘This wine should be at the top of any Toro-lovers’ list.’

Critics Ratings
‘With this wine the Egurens of Rioja fame have hit the mother lode in Toro. The '01 version of Termanthia is outrageously powerful and deep, like a shot to the jaw from Lennox Lewis in his prime. It's maxed out in terms of leather, smoky oak, and depth of fruit. Almost hard to describe, it's so big and mauling. Hold until at least 2008.’ - Michael Schachner, Wine Enthusiast, 95/100 (Jun 2005)
‘Saturated medium ruby. Nose like a first-growth Bordeaux: raspberry, cassis, violet, lead pencil and baking spices. Utterly suave on entry, then extremely fine-grained in the middle palate. A huge but tightly wound wine, with a great penetration on the palate and no sense of excess weight. Juicy and wonderfully long, but the wine’s fruit flavors are kept under wrap by strong tannins. Like Pauillac on steroids. The yield here was reportedly about half a ton per acre.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 95+/100 (Sep 2004)
‘Much more complete nose than the Numanthia 2001. Very seductive and gorgeous. Fine tannins only, and at the very end. Painful, but well managed. Still slightly floral. Disguises alcohol and almost tastes cool. Could drink now.’ - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Apr 2005)
‘This ambitious red shows plenty of extraction, with ripe fruit and toasty oak fighting through gripping tannins. It's exuberant, but needs time to harmonize and show the full range of its flavors. Best from 2006 through 2012.’ - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (Oct 2004)
