About this Item

Rioja Grandes Añades, 2001
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

Artadi is a well-regarded, high-profile wine producer based in the Rioja Alavesa town of Laguardia although famously having left the local Rioja wine body, it produces wines under the Vino de Mesa title. It makes a range of Rioja-style wines albeit with a subregional focus and is perhaps best-known for its single vineyard labels, all made from Tempranillo. Some of the most well-known wines produced by Artadi include the Viñas de Gain, which is a classic Rioja wine, and the Pagos Viejos, which is a single vineyard wine made from very old vines. The winery has received numerous accolades for its wines, including high scores from top wine critics and publications such as Wine Spectator and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Critics Ratings

The prodigious, inky/purple-colored 2001 Grandes Anadas marries elegance with tremendous power and flavor intensity. It represents Spain’s version of Comte de Vogue’s Musigny ... in a top vintage. Aromas of spice box, violets, raspberries, blackberries, plums, cherries, and an undeniable minerality are found in this structured, ripe, phenomenally intense red. The finish exceeds one minute, yet it gives the impression that it is not close to being mature. While it offers plenty of enjoyment now, ideally it should be given 3-4 years of cellaring and consumed over the following two decades.’ – Robert Parker Jr, Wine Advocate, 98/100 (Apr 2004)

'Very, very sweet and intense. Very attention-grabbing, though with very marked, pinching tannins on the palate. This needs a lot of time. Lots of alcohol on the finish, but long.’ – Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Nov 2003)

‘Medium ruby. Penetrating aromas of blueberry, cassis and bitter chocolate. At once fat and firm, with strong acids giving shape and verve to the flavors of roasted blackberry, violet, espresso, nuts, and baking spices. This has real power and thrust, not to mention inner-mouth perfume. Finishes with big but sweet tannins and terrific length. Like the Pagos Viejos, this is 100% Tempranillo. This special bottling was previously offered only in 1994, 1998 and 1999.’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 94+/100 ( Sep 2004)
