About the SessionJust how well do modern-era South African wines perform as they get older ? One of the most important measures of great wine is that it should be age-worthy, that is it should become more pleasurable and more interesting to drink with time in the bottle.

About this Item
Reyneke is one of 5 Stellenbosch properties to get First Growth status in Tim Atkin's 2017 SA Report. Reyneke farm began in 1863 when it was then named 'Uitzicht', meaning 'view'. It is located overlooking Stellenbosch and False Bay with north, south and east facing slopes. Reyneke is certified organic and biodynamic and follows sustainable practices in everything they do. 'Their wines demonstrate the care they take, not infallible wines, rather honest and personality-driven wines that are distinctive, as much cerebral as sensory experiences,' says Neal Martin.

Critics Ratings
'One of SA’s great value shirazes. 2013 richly scented with dark spice, herbs & ripe berries; similar sweet-fruited enticements lengthily reprised in its generous succulence, dry conclusion. Older oak simply rounds, fruit remains the focus. 2012 (4.5 stars, 92 pts) was also very fine.'- Platter's SA Wine Guide 2016, 5*
'It’s typical of the winery’s style: complex, aromatic and focused, with considerable grip, aromas of iodine, sage and lavender and a sweet blackberry core dusted with black pepper. Drink: 2015-22.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 94/100
'The 2013 Syrah has a lively bouquet with cranberry, blueberry and violet aromas, with a touch of clove and white fennel developing behind. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and well judged acidity; it has a light savory touch (black pudding!) with a nicely structured finish. Enjoy this classy, personality-driven Syrah over the next decade.' – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Nov 2015)
'Very dark crimson. Pale rim. Red fruit flavours, very winning and wholesome. Round and velvety. Super charming. Firm structure but massive fruit too. Long.' – Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jan 2015)
'Good dark, fresh red. Highly nuanced if slightly sauvage, reduced aromas of crushed raspberry, lavender, black pepper, spices and flint complicated by leather and a whiff of the barnyard and lifted by a floral high note. Very saline and savoury, conveying an impression of sweetness (the wine is actually quite dry at 1.8g/l r.s.) to its tangy raspberry and leather flavors. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and excellent length.' – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 91/100 (Apr 2015)
