About this Item

Granite Chenin, 2014
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).

Grapes for the Granite Chenin were sourced from a parcel of sustainably, dry-farmed 43 year old parcel of sustainably and dry farmed bush vines planted in the decomposed Granite soils of the Paardeberg. These very deep decomposed Granite soils tend to produce wines with great acidity and a flinty, stony aromatic profile.

Critics Ratings

‘Stellar 2014 on Perdeberg granite soils, delivers understated elegance, lovely fruit purity with a long racy farewell. Apple, almond, even some ripe pear, all quite subtle. Very refined, with lowest alcohol & sugar, & highest acidity of the 3 chenins; balanced, smooth & lively.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2016, 5*

'Taken from a 36-year-old parcel on the Paardeberg (right next to Eben Sadie’s cellar), this is flinty, smoky and focused, with a hint of struck match, low alcohol and plenty of bright, tangy acidity.’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2015, 93/100

'Offers a large core of fresh-cut green and yellow apple fruit flavors, backed by extra green almond and verbena notes. A light hint of pear skin frames the finish, leaving a quinine twinge lingering.' - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Apr 2016)

'The idea of the 2014 Granite Chenin is to make it exactly the same way as the Quartz and Schist Chenins in order to express the terroir. The Granite comes from the Paardeberg and it took the longest to come to fruition, because the well-drained soils are more devoid of nutrients and consequently take longer to ferment. It has a nutty nose like a cousin of a Meursault, mixed with sea-spray and a touch of white chocolate. The palate is fresh and poised on the entry with wonderful tension here, generous in the mouth with hazelnut and nutmeg notes, gently fanning out with shaved almond on the finish. This is a very complex Chenin Blanc, very terroir-driven, and though you could drink it now, I would prefer to see how it develops in bottle.' - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Nov 2015)

'Near Lammershoek. Rosa Kruger’s sparkling-wine-producer friend supplies some of these grapes. Very long ferment gives flinty salty character. Had to work the vineyard well to get more nitrogen in order to ferment dry. ‘The only one of our wines with technically a good acidity’, says Chris M. Very distinctive. Racy and sculpted. Should age well. Great natural acidity. Muscular.' - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Sep 2015)
