A diverse and exciting selection of Modernist and Contemporary works including a single-owner collection makes up Strauss & Co’s May ART Online Sale, taking place from Friday 3 to Monday 13 May.
VENICE – On Tuesday, 16 April 2024, a generous abundance of African creative talent – including artists and curators directly involved in the official programme for the 60th Venice Biennale – will contribute their knowledge and insight to the African Art in Venice Forum (AAVF 2024). Established in 2017, the AAVF is a public and free discursive platform held biannually during the opening week of the Venice Biennale.
CAPE TOWN – Robust bidding for blue-chip paintings by Lisa Brice, Maggie Laubser, Alexis Preller, Gerard Sekoto, Irma Stern and Vladimir Tretchikoff characterised Strauss & Co’s vibrant flagship evening sale on Tuesday, 19 March. Confirming her gilt status at auction, Irma Stern’s The Smoker, a captivating depiction of a Zanzibari man painted in 1945, sold to a telephone bidder for R17 156 250 / $905 310. The 94-lot sale of modern and contemporary art earned a healthy total of R45 554 355/ $2 400 400 from 72% lots sold.
Strauss & Co, South Africa’s leading auction house, is delighted to unveil a cornucopia of collectables and period furniture in its forthcoming March 2024 online Decorative Arts sale. The auction, which includes a selection of visiting card cases from the collection of British collector and businessman Richard J Stanes, opens on Monday, 18 March at 8am.
