VENICE – On Tuesday, 16 April 2024, a generous abundance of African creative talent – including artists and curators directly involved in the official programme for the 60th Venice Biennale – will contribute their knowledge and insight to the African Art in Venice Forum (AAVF 2024). Established in 2017, the AAVF is a public and free discursive platform held biannually during the opening week of the Venice Biennale.
Strauss & Co is delighted to present a striking 1943 portrait by Irma Stern, the prolific South African expressionist painter who ranks alongside Georgia O’Keeffe and Louise Bourgeois as amongst the ten most expensive women artists sold at auction globally between 2005-15. The painting will be sold at auction on 23 May 2016 in Johannesburg.
Art has long served as a vessel for articulating myths and developing narratives around important figures in various cultures throughout history. Strauss & Co’s April online-only auction of modern and contemporary art engages with a few examples of this cultural practice, with a new themed focus on Myths, Legends, Deities.
