About this Item

Granite Syrah and Schist Syrah, 2012
2 (1 x 2) 1500ml

Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).

Mullineux Granite Syrah 2012
This violet-perfumed Syrah is the most elegant of our single-terroir Syrahs. Grapes came from a single parcel of 19 year old dry land bush vines grown in the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg Mountain that gives the best expression of the Paardeberg’s terroir – freshness and perfume. The palate is medium to full bodied and delicately spicy, with a silky texture balanced by a fresh, natural acidity. There are notes of black pepper, violets and lilies, red berries and herbs. Only 50 magnums produced.

Mullineux Schist Syrah 2012
This is the most structured Syrah in our Single Terroir range. Grapes came from a single parcel of 17 year old vines planted in the stony Shale and Schist soils at our home vineyard of Roundstone on Kasteelberg mountain. This parcel of Syrah gives the best expression of the Kasteelberg’s terroir – density and structure. On the nose there are notes of black pepper, black fruit and spices. The palate is full-bodied with a meaty, savoury character, plenty of silky tannins giving structure and a balancing natural acidity. The finish is fresh, long and supple. Only 50 magnums produced.

Critics Ratings

Mullineux Granite Syrah 2012
‘An illuminating demonstration of the effect of terroir in this range of wines. 2012 from single Perdeberg vineyard on granite-based soils is very tightly focused & flinty, least expressive of the quartet of Syrahs. Intense fruit & oak tannins, slow evolving, but like siblings below, built for a decade. Infanticide now, but richly rewarding in the future.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide, 4.5*

‘About 100 cases of each of these soil-type bottlings. Very deep soils and never water stressed, also greener and quite a luscious nose. But on the palate it is sinewy and only lightly treacly. Quite racy and refined.’ – Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Jan 2015)

‘The 2012 Mullineux Granite Syrah is 100% whole-bunch fermented and raised in 50% new oak. It has a sublime, mineral bouquet with fine tension with blackberry, dark plum, wet stone and touches of candied orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp acidity, fine grip with quite a pointed, assertive boysenberry and peaty finish. This is a very fine Syrah, although this year it is outclassed by the Schist.’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Oct 2014)

Mullineux Schist Syrah 2012
'2012 perfumed red berries & white pepper aromas provide a glimpse of future delights from single-vineyard Kasteelberg fruit. Palate bound up in dry, chalky tannins from schist-derived soils (same as 2011 (5 stars)), a structured vintage & vinification techniques (the latter identical for all these reds). Pedigree to age.'
- Platter's SA Wine Guide 2015, 4.5*

The 2012 Mullineux Schist Syrah has a more feminine bouquet than the Granite Syrah, perhaps a little more harmonious with blackberry, chalk, redder fruit and perhaps less floral than the Granite Syrah. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent and fleshier tannins than the Granite. It is underpinned by a taut line of acidity and is blessed with a very harmonious and satin-like smooth finish that lingers in the mouth, the minerality coming through on the aftertaste. This is a stunning Syrah from Chris and Andrea and their finest 2012. - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Oct 2014)

'Part Roundstone vineyard and part Kloofenberg. Well drained, more water stress, and hotter. Less blue than the Granite and Iron. Peppery nose. Very tense and lively. A bit denser than the Granite. Electric tension.' - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Jan 2015)
