The Classic was founded in 1963 by Nat Nakasa and after his death, edited by Barney Simon. It became defunct in 1976 and then it was resuscitated and edited by Sydney Sipho Sepamla who renamed it New Classic. Sepamla had presented a paper at a writer's seminar in the US and mentioned that there were not many opportunities for black writers. Barney Simon (editor of The Classic) and Lionel Abrahams (past editor of The Purple Renoster) suggested that he revived The Classic. It disappeared again to resurface as The Classic and was then edited by Jaki Seroke. It was published by African Writer’s Association in the early 1980s.
