The Classic was founded in 1963 by Nat Nakasa and after his death, edited by Barney Simon. It became defunct in 1976 and then it was resuscitated and edited by Sydney Sipho Sepamla who renamed it New Classic. Sepamla had presented a paper at a writer's seminar in 1975 and mentioned that there were not many opportunities for black writers. Barney Simon (editor of The Classic) and Lionel Abrahams (past editor of The Purple Renoster) suggested that he revived The Classic, utilising the remaining funds from The Classic plus financial augmentation from the Anglo-American Corporation.
