'Izwi was in many ways the heir of the alternative Afrikaans-language magazine, Wurm, and ran parallel with Contrast, New Coin, Ophir and Bolt. It also appeared during the period just prior to the profound turbulence that began in the 1970s and erupted from 1976 onwards.'
'Izwi appeared nineteen times in four years, including the final, double number. Another feature of Izwi was the number of writers it published: 150 in all. '
Izwi also carried a signed, numbered graphic work by an established artist in every number except 11. These graphics became sought after and, as Gray describes it, "Some dealers bougth copies [of Izwi] at 50c each and flogged the graphics at R5.00 a go, throwing away the rest of the magazine" (p. 47). We are talking here of work by Battiss, Burwitz, Catherine, Clarke, Coetzee, Jensma, Meerkotter, Michelow, Starcke, Swift and others.'
